Because the fishery is the expensive decision. The business is not. Flats, reef and offshore are three different days at similar prices. Choose wrong and the trip is wasted.
Ratings do not protect you from that. Every operator here has happy customers. Those customers booked the trip they wanted. A five-star flats guide is still wrong if you pictured a cooler of snapper.

Worth saying plainly, because it will happen to you too. Two domains named in search results as Key West charter companies are parked and for sale. One redirects to a sales lander. The other is a "contact with domain owner" page. Four more do not resolve at all.
That is a third of the candidate list. If a charter site looks thin, loads oddly, or carries no phone number, check it is a live business before you send a deposit.

More than we first thought: 5 of the 8 confirmed operators do. That number started at one and moved four times, and every move was the same mistake — checking one booking platform and reading the answer as whether the operator books online at all. 4 use FareHarbor and one uses VallyPro, which was only found by reading the menu on its own site. This page lists the FareHarbor 4; the rest are named further up. So expect to be able to book some of these online, expect to phone the others, and treat a phone-only operator as phone-only rather than as behind the times.

Then ask each survivor the same questions about the boat, the run and what happens if the weather turns.
