What is reef fishing in Key West like?
Steady bottom fishing over coral, ledges and wrecks a few miles out, mostly for yellowtail, mutton and mangrove snapper, with grouper kept from May to December. A half day reaches the reef easily: private half days ran $650–$1,199 per boat in October 2026, and party-boat seats $69.95–$99.
How reef fishing works
Key West Fishing Deals anchors on patch reefs, ledges and wrecks in 30 to 90 feet with live and cut bait; Florida Straits anchors up-current of the reef and drifts a chum slick; Gulfstream anchors over reef and wreck structure and fishes the bottom with squid, chumming to bring the snapper up. It is the steadiest action in the Keys and the trip most likely to fill a cooler, which is why operators steer families and first-timers to it.
What you catch on the reef
Yellowtail snapper all year, Peak April to August; mutton snapper, bigger and warier; mangrove snapper; grouper from May to December; kingfish on the reef edge in winter; amberjack on the deeper wrecks; and barracuda almost every trip.
