Half day or full day: which should you book?
Book a half day, four hours at $650–$1,199 per boat, for children, first-timers or a reef and backcountry trip. Book a full day, eight hours at $1,250–$2,000, for offshore fish like mahi, tuna and wahoo, or a long run west. Six hours, $900–$1,500, splits the difference.
| Half day (4 hours) | Full day (8 hours) | |
|---|---|---|
| Price per boat | $650–$1,199 | $1,250–$2,000 |
| Typical times | Morning or afternoon, e.g. 8 am to noon or 1 to 5 pm | From 7:30 or 8 am to mid-afternoon |
| How far | Reef and backcountry near Key West | Offshore water, the reef edge, or west toward the Marquesas |
| What you catch | Snapper on the reef; tarpon, permit, bonefish on the flats | Adds mahi, tuna, wahoo, sailfish |
| Included | Rods, bait, licence, ice; most clean your fish | The same; fuel surcharge more likely; bring lunch |
| Suits | Children, first-timers, seasick-prone, tight schedules | Anglers who came for offshore fish |
| If the bite is slow | Less time to move and try again | Time to change spots or water |
What the extra four hours buy
Range, mostly. The reef and the backcountry flats are close to Key West, so a four-hour trip spends most of its time fishing. Offshore water is a longer run each way, and that is what a full day pays for.
Cora Beth’s schedule shows it in miles: its 5-hour daily reef trip fishes within 15 miles of Key West, its 7-hour full day goes up to 25 miles, and its 10-hour marathon runs 30 miles and more. Recon says its full-day backcountry trip can reach the Marquesas, and Key West Fishing Deals’ website sells the Marquesas as a 12-hour trip.
Price: the full day costs more, but less per hour
In the October 2026 scan, private half days ran $650–$1,199 per boat, three-quarter days $900–$1,500, and full days $1,250–$2,000. At the five operators that publish both a half and a full day, the full day costs between 1.3 and 2 times the half: Laid Back $900 and $1,600, Charter Boat Linda D $1,000 and $1,500, Blind Squirrel’s Even Keel $950 and $1,250. Tip 15 to 20 percent on whichever you book.
The charter price page has every operator’s figure, and the tipping guide what the crew expects.
What you will catch on each
On a half day, the reef gives steady snapper fishing, yellowtail, mutton and mangrove, all year. The backcountry flats are sight fishing for tarpon, permit and bonefish, all catch-and-release, plus barracuda. On a full day, the boat can reach offshore water for mahi, blackfin tuna, wahoo and sailfish.
Which of those is running depends on the month: mahi peak from May to September, sailfish from November to March, tarpon from April to July. Best time to fish the Keys has the month by month table, and what fish you can keep the limits.
Which to book
- Children or first-timers: half day. It is the trip the operators themselves suggest for younger children. Kids on a charter has the ages.
- Prone to seasickness: half day in the backcountry, the calmest water. The seasickness guide explains why.
- Mahi, tuna, wahoo or sailfish: full day, or at least six hours.
- A cruise-ship day or a tight schedule: half day. A morning or afternoon slot fits around everything else; see fishing on a cruise stop.
- The Marquesas or the Dry Tortugas: full day or longer, at the operators that run them.
Half day or full day: questions
Should I book a half-day or full-day fishing charter in Key West?
Book a half day for children, first-timers, anyone prone to seasickness, or a first look at the reef and backcountry. Book a full day if you want offshore fish such as mahi, tuna, wahoo or sailfish, or a long run to the Marquesas. A six-hour three-quarter day is the compromise, with time to reach the reef edge or nearer offshore water.
How much more does a full-day charter cost than a half day?
In the October 2026 scan, a private half day ran $650–$1,199 per boat and a full day $1,250–$2,000. At the five operators that publish both, the full day costs between 1.3 and 2 times the half day, so the hourly rate drops on the longer trip. The price page names every operator and price.
What can you catch on a half-day charter in Key West?
Reef fish and backcountry fish: yellowtail, mutton and mangrove snapper on the reef, and tarpon, permit, bonefish and barracuda on the flats in season. Key West Fishing Deals says four hours is enough to reach the reef and put a real bend in a rod. Offshore species are mostly out of reach in four hours. Best time to go shows what runs when.
What is included on a full-day charter that is not on a half day?
Usually nothing extra except time and range: the same rods, bait, licence, ice and fish cleaning. You bring more food and water. Long runs are where fuel surcharges appear, at operators such as Key West Fishing Deals, and some full-day trips include lunch, such as Conch ’N Around’s full days. Ask what the price covers before booking.
Is a half-day charter worth it in the Florida Keys?
Yes, because the reef and the backcountry are close to Key West, so a half day spends most of its time fishing rather than running. It is the trip operators suggest for children and first-timers, and it costs less in total. It is the wrong choice only if the fish you came for live offshore.
