How much do you tip a fishing charter captain and mate?
Fifteen to 20 percent of the charter price, in cash, given to the mate at the end of the trip. That is the range Key West operators publish themselves, and two say 20 percent or more. It is never included in the price. On a party boat the amount is at your discretion.
What Key West operators say about tipping
Seven of the twenty operators on the operator list say something about gratuity on their own pages. Each one, in short, read on October 6, 2026:
- Key West Fishing Deals: 15–20% crew gratuity on shared trips; 20% customary on its boat pages. Not included in the price or the fuel surcharge. Source
- Boa Vida Charters: The price does not include the mate’s gratuity, “typically 15-20% of your charter price.” Source
- Salty Goat Fishing Charters: The mates work for tips; 20% of the total charter price is customary. Source
- Shadow Caster Charters: Gratuities for a captain are customarily 20% or more of the charter. Source
- Gulfstream Fishing: Party boat: gratuity for the crew at your discretion; cash suggested. Source
- Charter Boat Linda D: No percentage. Tips for the mate can be paid by card, cash, Venmo, Cash App or PayPal. Source
- Wrecked Charters: Gratuity “appreciated”, listed after what is included; no percentage. Source
The four that give a number agree: 15 to 20 percent, or 20 and up. None suggests less than 15. The other thirteen say nothing, which is not the same as saying tipping is optional.
What the tip works out to
On the prices operators published in October 2026, 15 to 20 percent comes to about:
- $98 to $240 on a private half day ($650 to $1,199)
- $135 to $300 on a three-quarter day ($900 to $1,500)
- $188 to $400 on a full day ($1,250 to $2,000)
Split it across the group: four people on a $1,000 half day put in $38 to $50 each. The price page has the trip prices behind those figures.
Who gets the tip
On most private boats there are two crew: the captain, who owns or runs the boat and finds the fish, and the mate, who rigs, baits, untangles, gaffs and cleans. The mate is the one working for tips, so the money goes to the mate, and on a two-crew boat the mate usually shares it. When the captain fishes alone, as on many flats skiffs, the tip is the captain’s.
When to tip more, and when less
Tip on the work, not the catch. A slow day where the crew moved spots, re-rigged and kept the children busy deserves the top of the range. So does a crew that cleaned and bagged a big box of fish. If a crew was rude or careless, say so to the operator; skipping the tip without a word tells nobody anything.
Party boats and split charters
A party-boat seat costs $69.95 to $99, and nobody expects 20 percent of a whole boat from one passenger. Gulfstream leaves it to you and suggests cash. A few dollars to the mate who helped you, more if they cleaned your fish, is the usual practice. On a split charter, where you share a small private boat with strangers, tip as you would on a private charter, on your share of the price.
Tipping questions
How much should you tip a fishing charter in the Florida Keys?
15 to 20 percent of the charter price is the figure Key West operators give themselves, and two say 20 percent or more. On a $1,000 half day that is $150 to $200 for the crew. Go higher for a crew that worked hard on a slow day, cleaned a big catch or looked after children well.
Is the tip included in a Key West fishing charter price?
No. Every operator read that mentions gratuity says it is not included, and Key West Fishing Deals adds that it is not part of the fuel surcharge either. Budget it on top of the price on the booking page. The charter price page shows what the trips themselves cost.
Do you tip the captain or the mate?
Hand it to the mate. On a private charter the mate rigs the rods, baits the hooks, gaffs and cleans the fish, and works largely for tips; Salty Goat says its mates work for tips outright. If the captain runs the boat alone, the tip goes to the captain. Ask quietly at the dock if you are unsure.
How much do you tip on a party boat?
There is no set figure. Gulfstream leaves it to your discretion and suggests cash. Many anglers give the mates a few dollars per person, or more if a mate spent time untangling lines or cleaning fish. The fare itself, $69.95 to $99 per adult, does not include it.
Can you tip a charter crew by card?
Sometimes. Charter Boat Linda D takes tips for the mate by card, cash, Venmo, Cash App or PayPal, but most operators say nothing, and a card reader is not always on board. Bring cash to be safe, in an envelope or folded in a handshake at the end of the trip.
