Florida Keys fishing trips and charters, by type

Key West sells several different days from the same docks, at similar prices. Booking the wrong one is the most common mistake, so start with the water and the length, then pick the boat.

Backcountry and flats fishing

The flats are the shallow water behind and around the islands, fished from a small skiff that the captain poles quietly along while you cast at fish you can see. The targets are the famous three: tarpon, permit and bonefish, all catch-and-release in Florida, plus barracuda and, in the backcountry, snook in its open months. It is the calmest water in the Keys, which makes it the trip Florida Straits Sportfishing calls its easiest for children and first-timers, and the right pick for anyone prone to seasickness.

Flats skiffs take up to four anglers, so these are private trips. Permit and bonefish run best from spring through October and tarpon from April to July. If dinner is the point of your day, this is not the trip; if a fish you watched eat the fly is, nothing else here compares. Flats species covers what lives there.

Reef and wreck fishing

The Florida Reef runs the length of the Keys a few miles offshore, and it is where most Key West charters, private and party boat, spend the day. The boat anchors or drifts over coral, ledges and wrecks, and you drop bait for snapper: yellowtail, mutton and mangrove, all keepers all year at legal size, with grouper from May to December, hogfish in season, and kingfish and cero mackerel in the cooler months.

It is the trip with the steadiest action and the best chance of a cooler of fillets, which is why most operators suggest it for families. Offshore and deep-sea fishing

Offshore means running past the reef into deep blue water toward the Gulf Stream, trolling for mahi, blackfin tuna, wahoo and sailfish. The fish are bigger and the fights longer, and so are the quiet stretches between bites. Mahi peak from May to September; sailfish, wahoo and blackfin tuna are best through the winter, by the Keys tourism council’s calendar.

Offshore trips need time and a bigger boat, so book six or eight hours: a private full day ran $1,250–$2,000 per boat in the October 2026 scan. Half-day vs full-day charters

A half day is about four hours, morning or afternoon, and reaches the reef and the backcountry. A full day is about eight and reaches offshore water. The full day costs more in total but less per hour: at the operators that publish both, between 1.3 and 2 times the half-day price. Laid Back Key West, for example, charges $900 for four hours and $1,600 for eight.

Party boats and split charters

A party boat sells single seats on a big boat that fishes the reef on a fixed schedule. It is the cheapest way onto the water: $69.95–$99 per adult in the October 2026 scan, with children’s fares from $39.95 on Gulfstream. Bait and tackle are included, rod rental is a few dollars on some boats, and the mates clean your fish, free or for a small charge.

The trade-off is company: Gulfstream’s six-hour trip carries up to 45 people. Tarpon season and night trips

Tarpon are the Keys’ signature fish, and the tourism council’s calendar puts their peak from April to July, and much of that fishing happens at dusk and after dark: Recon Sportfishing runs a four-hour sunset tarpon trip from April 20 to June 20, and Florida Straits a two-hour night trip for tarpon and sharks.

Night trips are not only for tarpon. Gulfstream runs a summer night trip on its party boat, and Key West Fishing Deals and Florida Straits run night snapper trips. Every tarpon is released, and a tarpon over 40 inches must stay in the water. Best time to go shows which months suit which fish.

Fishing elsewhere in the Florida Keys

Key West has the most boats, but it is not the only place to fish. Each town up the chain has its own water, its own docks and its own reefs that are closed to fishing:

• Key Largo fishing charters: the closest Keys town to Miami, with Florida Bay backcountry and five no-fishing sanctuary reefs.
• Islamorada fishing charters: the Everglades and Florida Bay on the doorstep, and how it differs from Key West.
• Marathon fishing charters: the middle Keys, the largest fleet on the roster and bridges open to fishing.
• Lower Keys fishing: Big Pine to Sugarloaf, Looe Key, and which bridges are open or closed.

The licence rule is the reverse of what most visitors expect

On a licensed Key West charter you need no licence of your own. Florida exempts anyone fishing from a for-hire vessel that holds a valid charter licence, so the boat covers you.
