How is fishing in Islamorada different from Key West?
Islamorada sits in the Upper Keys with Florida Bay and Everglades National Park behind it, so its backcountry is a short run away, while Key West’s backcountry is the Gulf side and the Marquesas. The tourism council lists bonefish and tarpon on the flats, permit and snook in the backcountry, and mahi and sailfish offshore.
Islamorada or Key West: which suits your trip
Choose Islamorada if the backcountry is the point: Florida Bay and the Everglades are on its doorstep, and several operators here run skiff and bay-boat trips into them. It is also closer to Miami than Key West, at Mile Markers 90 to 63.
Choose Key West if you want the widest choice of boats in one place: twenty operators book online there, from $69.95 party-boat seats to big sportfishers. The Key West operators and Charter Boat Row cover them.
The tourism council calls Islamorada the Sport Fishing Capital of the World. That is the council’s own marketing line, not an independent ranking.

Four Sanctuary Preservation Areas off Islamorada ban fishing of any kind; diving and snorkeling are allowed.
- Alligator Reef, 4.5 miles east of Indian Key.

- Hen and Chickens, in Hawk Channel off Plantation Key.
- Davis Reef, 4.5 miles southeast of Plantation Key.
Florida Bay backcountry from Islamorada: the Everglades rules
Much of Florida Bay behind the Upper Keys lies inside Everglades National Park, and the park sets rules of its own. They matter most if you take your own or a rental boat; on a charter the captain works to them.
- Boater education. Recreational boaters must complete the park’s Boater Education Program and carry the certificate while boating in the park.
- Park pass. An entrance pass covers a single vehicle or vessel ($35, seven days).
- Pole/troll zones. Combustion motors may not be run in areas of Florida Bay generally under two feet deep.
- Closed islands. All keys (islands) in Florida Bay are closed to protect bird nesting areas, with listed exceptions.
- No lobster or queen conch may be taken in the park.
- Possession limit. Licensed anglers may hold 20 fish each at any time, no more than 10 of one species.
- Mercury advisory. The park reports high mercury in some northern Florida Bay species, including spotted seatrout, crevalle jack and ladyfish.
Fishing from the bridges and shore
The tourism council lists the Islamorada bridges open to fishing as Channel 2 (Mile Marker 73) and the south end of Channel 5 (MM 71), with Long Key (MM 63–65) at the Marathon line. Off a charter you need your own Florida saltwater licence. Do you need a fishing license explains when.

Islamorada: questions
Why is Islamorada called the Sport Fishing Capital of the World?
It is the Florida Keys tourism council’s description of the town, a marketing claim rather than an independent ranking. What backs it is the range of water close by: bonefish and tarpon on the flats, permit and snook in the backcountry, and mahi and sailfish offshore, in the council’s own words.
Should I fish Islamorada or Key West?
Islamorada for the Florida Bay and Everglades backcountry and a shorter drive from Miami; Key West for the most boats in one place, from party boats to big offshore sportfishers. Both have reef and offshore fishing. Charter prices shows what Key West trips cost.
Where do Islamorada fishing charters leave from?
Most of the operators listed here use Whale Harbor Marina at 83413 Overseas Highway, World Wide Sportsman at 81576, or IslaMarina at 85920. Each operator’s card above shows the dock it names on its own website; confirm it when you book.
Do I need a permit to fish Florida Bay?
On a charter, no: the captain handles it. If you take your own or a rental boat into Everglades National Park’s Florida Bay waters, the park requires a boater education certificate, an entrance pass for the boat, and a Florida saltwater licence, and bans running motors in pole/troll zones.
