Key Largo Fishing Charters

The first of the Keys, an hour’s drive from Miami. Florida Bay backcountry on one side, the reef and offshore on the other, and five reefs nearby where no fishing is allowed at all.

What is fishing in Key Largo like?

Key Largo has both kinds of water: bonefish, tarpon and snook in the Florida Bay backcountry, and mahi, sailfish and wahoo offshore, according to the Keys tourism council. It is the closest Keys town to Miami, about an hour’s drive. Several famous reefs nearby are sanctuary zones where all fishing is banned.

What Key Largo fishing is known for

The Keys tourism council sums Key Largo up as bonefish, tarpon and snook in Florida Bay’s backcountry, plus mahi, sailfish and wahoo offshore. It also calls Key Largo the Diving Capital of the World, and that matters to anglers: the best-known dive reefs off Key Largo are no-fishing zones.

It is the gateway to the Keys, at Mile Markers 108 to 90, about 22 miles down U.S. 1 from Florida City at the end of the Turnpike. If you are flying into Miami and want to fish without driving the whole chain, this is the nearest place to do it. Fishing out of Key West instead? Florida Keys charter prices and the Key West operators cover that end.

The Key Largo reefs where you cannot fish

The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary bans fishing of any kind inside its Sanctuary Preservation Areas. Diving, snorkeling and boating are allowed; fishing and collecting are not. Five of them sit off Key Largo:

  • Carysfort / South Carysfort, the largest in the sanctuary, at the north end.
  • The Elbow, about six nautical miles southeast of Key Largo.
  • Key Largo Dry Rocks and Grecian Rocks, home of the Christ of the Deep statue.
  • Molasses Reef, the busiest dive reef in the Upper Keys.
  • Conch Reef, 5.8 miles south of Tavernier, beside a permit-only research area.

Pennekamp and the Key Largo Management Area

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park covers about 70 nautical square miles off Key Largo. Fishing from a boat is allowed in its waters, outside the protected zones, and the park says a saltwater licence is required there (on a licensed charter the boat’s licence covers you). Spearfishing is not permitted within the park, and the sanctuary’s Key Largo Management Area bans spearfishing too.

If you are launching your own boat: the park reports one of its two ramps closed for construction.

Florida Bay backcountry from Key Largo: the Everglades rules

Much of Florida Bay behind the Upper Keys lies inside Everglades National Park, and the park sets rules of its own. They matter most if you take your own or a rental boat; on a charter the captain works to them.

  • Boater education. Recreational boaters must complete the park’s Boater Education Program and carry the certificate while boating in the park.
  • Park pass. An entrance pass covers a single vehicle or vessel ($35, seven days).
  • Pole/troll zones. Combustion motors may not be run in areas of Florida Bay generally under two feet deep.
  • Closed islands. All keys (islands) in Florida Bay are closed to protect bird nesting areas, with listed exceptions.
  • No lobster or queen conch may be taken in the park.
  • Possession limit. Licensed anglers may hold 20 fish each at any time, no more than 10 of one species.
  • Mercury advisory. The park reports high mercury in some northern Florida Bay species, including spotted seatrout, crevalle jack and ladyfish.

Key Largo: questions

Is Key Largo good for fishing?

Yes, for both backcountry and offshore fishing. The Keys tourism council lists bonefish, tarpon and snook in Florida Bay and mahi, sailfish and wahoo offshore. It is also the closest Keys town to Miami, about an hour’s drive, which makes it the easiest place to fish the Keys on a short trip.

Can you fish at Molasses Reef or the Christ of the Deep statue?

No. Molasses Reef and Key Largo Dry Rocks, where the statue sits, are Sanctuary Preservation Areas, and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary bans all fishing inside them. So are Carysfort, the Elbow and Conch Reef. You can dive and snorkel there; your captain fishes elsewhere.

Can you spearfish in Key Largo?

Not in John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park or the sanctuary’s Key Largo Management Area: spearfishing is prohibited in both, and spearfishing gear may only be carried through without stopping. Spearfishing operators run their trips outside those areas.

How far is Key Largo from Key West?

Key Largo runs from Mile Marker 108 to 90 and Key West sits at the far end of U.S. 1, below Mile Marker 4, so it is the full length of the Keys. If you want to fish both ends, plan them as separate days. Charter Boat Row covers where Key West boats leave from.
