Should you book a Keys fishing trip in hurricane season?
You can: the season runs June 1 to November 30 and covers prime months for mahi, tarpon and permit. The National Hurricane Center puts the peak on September 10, with most activity mid-August to mid-October. Operators refund or reschedule when the captain cancels for weather, but none publishes a hurricane-specific policy.
The season, by the numbers
The National Hurricane Center says the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, peaks on September 10, and sees most activity between mid-August and mid-October; an average season (1991–2020) has 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes. The National Weather Service in Key West calls June to October the wet season, with about 65 percent of the year’s rain in showers and thunderstorms, and December to April the dry season.
What it means for the fishing
Hurricane season overlaps some of the best fishing of the year: mahi peak from May to September, tarpon run into July, and permit and bonefish are best in September and October, by the Keys tourism council’s calendar. Gulfstream calls September peak hurricane season and says it watches the forecast and builds in flexibility. Best time to go has the month-by-month table.
Cancellations and refunds
None of the twenty operators on the operator list publishes a named-storm or hurricane-specific policy, read 6 October 2026. What they do publish covers weather in general: every operator that states a rule says the captain decides, with a refund or a new date. Gulfstream and Key West Fishing Deals both promise a full refund if they cancel for adverse weather; Wet Dream waives its cancellation fee for weather such as a small craft advisory.
What weather rules do not cover is you cancelling because of a forecast. Check each operator’s window (24 hours to seven days) before booking: charter prices lists them.
How to book in hurricane season
- Keep a spare day in your trip so a weather cancellation can move rather than vanish.
- Watch the National Weather Service Key West forecast in the days before.
- Consider trip protection if the operator offers it at checkout; Key West Fishing Deals and Gulfstream mention it.
- Remote trips are most exposed. The National Park Service says storms can close Dry Tortugas on short notice.
