Seasickness on a Florida Keys Fishing Charter

Book a backcountry or reef trip if you are prone to it, take medication before you board rather than after, keep your eyes on the horizon and stay out of the bow. Skip the drinks the night before.

How do you avoid seasickness on a Keys charter?

Choose a backcountry or reef trip over offshore, take any motion-sickness medication before you board, sleep well and skip alcohol the night before. On the boat, watch the horizon, stay out of the bow, get fresh air and keep busy fishing. Seasickness is not refundable, so plan for it rather than hope.

Pick the water first

The trip you book decides more than anything you pack. Key West sells three different days: the backcountry flats, in shallow water behind the islands; the reef, a short run out; and offshore, a longer run into open water.

Florida Straits Sportfishing puts it plainly to its own customers: prone to seasickness, choose an inshore or backcountry charter, because offshore and deep-drop trips ride bigger seas. A half-day reef trip is a sensible middle ground, and a shorter trip means less time exposed. The three fisheries explains what each day is like.

What works, according to the CDC

The CDC’s travel-medicine guide on motion sickness, read for this page, is clear on what helps and what does not.

  • A horizon view. Looking at a fixed horizon reduces the mismatch between what your eyes and your balance report.
  • Staying out of the most-moving spots. On a boat, that means not the bow. Gulfstream’s crew tells customers to sit toward the back and stay outside on deck.
  • Riding with the boat. Standing loose and moving with the motion, “getting your sea legs”, helps.
  • Keeping your head still and your eyes off screens. Reading and scrolling make it worse.
  • Fresh air and slow, regular breathing. Controlled breathing cut symptoms in laboratory trials.
  • Medication taken before you start. The drugs work best before exposure, not after symptoms begin.

What to avoid

  • Alcohol and smoking, which the CDC says increase motion sickness, the night before as well as on board.
  • A short night. Sleep deprivation makes it worse, and offshore trips start early.
  • Non-drowsy antihistamines. The newer allergy tablets are designed not to reach the brain and do not work for motion sickness.
  • Relying on bands or ginger. The CDC rates the evidence for both as weak.
  • Going below or staring at the deck once you feel it starting. Get outside, look out and breathe.

When to go

Sea state is a matter of the day’s wind, not the calendar, and it can change between booking and boarding. Check the National Weather Service marine forecast for Key West the day before. If a small craft advisory is up, offshore trips may not run at all, and the captain makes that call. Ask the operator what the forecast means for the water they plan to fish.

Children and seasickness

The CDC notes that children under two rarely get motion sickness, and that susceptibility peaks between seven and twelve. Key West Fishing Deals tells families to bring motion-sickness medication for a child prone to it and to book a half day for younger kids. Taking kids on a charter covers ages and trip choice.

If it happens anyway

Tell the mate. Move to the back, stay outside, get your face in the breeze and look at the horizon. Seasickness is not a reason operators refund, so do not book the longest offshore trip as a first day on the water.

Seasickness questions

How do you avoid seasickness on a fishing charter?

Pick calmer water, take any medication before you board, and manage the day on the boat. The CDC lists a view of the horizon, staying away from the parts of a boat that move most, keeping your head still, fresh air and slow controlled breathing among what helps, and alcohol, smoking and lack of sleep among what makes it worse.

Which Florida Keys fishing trip is least likely to make you seasick?

A backcountry or flats trip, in the shallow water behind the islands. Florida Straits Sportfishing tells anglers prone to seasickness to choose an inshore or backcountry charter, and says its offshore and deep-drop trips ride bigger seas. A half-day reef trip is the middle ground. Half day vs full day covers how long each keeps you out.

When should you take seasickness medication?

Before the trip, not once you feel ill. The CDC says motion-sickness drugs work best taken before exposure. Florida Straits Sportfishing tells offshore customers to take theirs the night before. Ask a pharmacist which to use and when, because the effective ones can make you drowsy. Gulfstream says it carries none on board, so bring your own.

Do seasickness bands or ginger work?

The evidence is weak. The CDC says laboratory trials found acupressure bands no more effective than a placebo, and that support for ginger, diets and supplements is weak and contradictory. If one works for you, use it alongside, not instead of, the things that do. The newer non-drowsy antihistamines do not work for motion sickness either.

Will I get a refund if I get seasick on a charter?

No. Gulfstream states that seasickness is not a refundable situation, and Key West Fishing Deals says calm conditions cannot be guaranteed. Weather is different: when the captain cancels for conditions, operators refund or reschedule. If you are worried, book a shorter or calmer trip rather than hoping.
