Can you catch and keep barracuda in the Keys?
You can catch them all year: the Keys tourism council grades barracuda Peak in every month, on the flats and reefs. Keeping is limited to a 15 to 36-inch slot, two per person and six per boat, with one over 36 inches allowed. FWC warns larger barracuda may cause ciguatera, and most are released.
What great barracuda are
FWC calls the great barracuda a top predator in reef areas, eating fish, squid and shrimp, ranging inshore to offshore, with young fish in seagrass beds. The Florida Museum says any over about 4.8 feet is very large, that they live at least 14 years, and that in the Keys they are believed to breed in spring. The IGFA all-tackle record is 87 pounds 3 ounces.
