Should you book a private or shared fishing charter?
Book private if you have four or more people, children, or a target fish in mind: the boat and crew are yours. Book a shared seat if you are one or two people on a budget: a party boat costs $69.95–$99 a person in the October 2026 scan, against $650–$1,199 for a private half-day boat.
The three ways to book a seat
| Private charter | Split charter | Party boat | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you buy | The whole boat and crew | A seat on a small private-size boat | A seat on a big shared boat |
| Price | $650–$1,199 per boat (half day) | $225–$300 per person | $69.95–$99 per adult |
| Who is aboard | Your group only | Your group and strangers | Up to about 45 passengers |
| Where it fishes | Your choice with the captain: flats, reef or offshore | The captain’s plan for the day | Fixed reef trip on a schedule |
| Suits | Families, groups of 4+, target species | Couples who want a small boat | Solo anglers, budgets, kids who want steady bites |
| Example | Low Tide, Laid Back, Charter Boat Linda D | Charter Boat Linda D, Key West Fishing Deals | Gulfstream, Cora Beth, Captain Conch, Salty Goat |
Price per person is what decides it
Four people splitting a private half day at $650–$1,199 pay roughly $163 to $300 each. Two people pay $325 to $600 each for the same boat. A party-boat seat costs $69.95–$99, with children’s fares from $39.95 on Gulfstream. So for one or two people, shared is far cheaper; from four people up, private costs less than the gap suggests and buys a great deal more.
Split charters sit in between. Charter Boat Linda D sells split seats at $225 for four hours and $300 for six, and Key West Fishing Deals runs shared trips of four, six and eight hours; it says shared trips need at least four guests to depart.
What the private price buys
- The water you want. A private captain can run you to the flats for tarpon or offshore for mahi. A party boat fishes its reef route.
- The crew’s attention. One mate for your group rather than for forty people.
- Your schedule. Many private boats offer morning and afternoon half days; party boats leave once, at a fixed time.
- Leaving early. On a private boat you can head in when the children have had enough.
When a shared seat is the better trip
For a solo angler or a couple, or for children who mostly want to catch something, a party boat is good value: steady reef fishing for snapper, the gear and bait included, and fish cleaning free or a few cents a fish. Gulfstream runs a six-hour reef trip daily from 10 am to 4 pm, and Cora Beth a five-hour reef trip within 15 miles of Key West. Party boat fishing covers how each runs.
Private vs shared: questions
Is a private charter worth it in Key West?
For four or more people, usually yes: a $650–$1,199 half day split four ways is about $163 to $300 each, and you get the boat, the crew and the choice of water. For one or two people a party-boat seat at $69.95–$99 is far cheaper, and the fishing is steady reef fishing.
What is a split charter?
A split or shared charter sells individual seats on a small, private-size boat, so you fish with a few strangers rather than the 40-odd on a party boat. Charter Boat Linda D sells split seats at $225 for four hours and $300 for six. Key West Fishing Deals runs shared trips and needs at least four guests to depart.
How many people fit on a private fishing charter?
Usually four to six. Low Tide and Recon take up to four, Laid Back up to six, and Above The Cut up to four anglers; bigger boats take more, and Blind Squirrel charges per passenger above eight. Groups larger than one boat can book two boats or a party boat privately. Check the limit on each booking page.
Are party boats good for beginners?
Yes. The crew supplies rods and bait, shows you what to do and fishes the reef, where bites are steadier than offshore. Gulfstream has no minimum age, and children’s fares start at $39.95. The trade-off is space and attention: you share the rail and the mates with everyone aboard.
